Colophon
How this is made, and which parts of it are not settled yet.
Type
Set in an old-style serif — Palatino Linotype, or Iowan Old Style where it exists — with a neutral grotesque for dates, captions and labels.
Both are a stand-in. The intention is a Garamond or Caslon lineage face, because five centuries of survival is the best available evidence that something will still read well in twenty years. That decision is open.
Structure
One column of prose, offset right of centre, with a wide margin to its left. The margin carries dates, catalogue numbers, footnotes, cross-links, and notes added years after a piece was published. Nothing in it is required reading.
Dark is the primary setting. The light one is designed separately rather than inverted, because a book is not printed on white.
Not settled
Photographs from the previous site remain in use while a new documentary set is commissioned. Rooms without finished material remain out of the public index until they earn a place.
The library grows slowly. The notes grow continuously.
Governed by
Four documents kept in the open, in the repository this site is built from: a reputation thesis that states the purpose, a constitution that states the method, a list of small discoveries to draw from over years, and the creative direction that produced what you are looking at.
They are amended in writing, with the reason recorded. Two amendments are already noted in them.
