Lights Out: Massive Reddit Communities Stage Blackout in Solidarity for Third-Party Apps
Thousands of Reddit communities have joined a blackout in protest against API changes. More than 80% of the leading subreddits are currently affected, with users unable to access them. The protest aims to challenge the company’s decision to charge high fees for API access, causing many developers to shut down their apps. Despite Reddit’s attempts to address the concerns, the blackout continues, and the fate of the affected communities remains uncertain.

The Reddit Blackout, which was initiated as a protest against the company’s controversial API changes, is ongoing, surpassing its expected 48-hour duration. Contrary to public statements from Reddit, recent messages sent by the company to moderators indicate a growing impatience with the protests. The messages have urged moderators to reopen their subreddits or face potential removal from their positions.

The protest, which initially involved around 3,000 subreddits, has since grown to over 8,000 subreddits. As of writing this newsletter, more than 4,000 subreddits are still actively participating in the blackout.
